The ward

Ward no 13 of Karol Jonscher University Hospital provides care for children of all ages. Common causes for referral to the ward include:
- inlammatory bowel diseases
- a wide range of metabolic diseases and metabolic diseases „selective screening”
- cystic fibrosis (screening centre)
- infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract
- coeliac disease
- pancreatitis
- nutritional problems in surgical patients
- chronic constipation of different etiologies
- severe food allergies.

The team is experienced in enteral and parenteral nutrition.

Patients with gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases require constant psychological care which is provided both on the ward and in the ambulatory care.

The ward is a reference centre:
- for pediatric gastroenterology for the population of Great Poland voivodeship (3.4 million inhabitants)
- for pediatric metabolic diseases for the population of Great Poland and Lubusz voivodeships (4.4 million inhabitants).

Gastrointestinal tract functional investigations unit

In our functional investigations laboratory we employ 13C, hydrogen and methane breath tests, esophageal and anal manometry, 24-hour pH-metry and 24-hour esophageal pH-impedance monitoring for gastrointestinal tract diseases diagnostics.

Endoscopic investigations unit

The endoscopic investigations unit provides opportunity for examination of the upper and the lower gastrointestinal tract 24 hours a day.

We perform dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in children and adults using a recently acquired Hologic Discovery system.

The staff of the Department is actively involved in teaching of both Polish and foregin students of MD, nursing and dietetics programmes. Courses in pediatrics, pediatric gastroenterology, metabolic diseases and nutrition are thought. Our aim is to provide education of highest quality by teaching our students practical skills and sharing knowledge necessary for the improvement of their clinical reasoning. We value professionalism and we expect the same of our students.

Residents in pediatrics and medical interns from other hospitals in the region have the opportunity to temporarily join our team.

Members of our group teach pediatricians, general practitioners, patients and their families during conferences and meetings.

Our group conducts research in cooperation with domestic and international partners. We have the expertise and the equipment necessary for nutrition research. A wide range of clinical and biochemical analyses can be performed in-house. Our main areas of interest are: nutrition, cystic fibrosis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Among our foreign partners are:
